Unemployment Fund of Finnish Industrial Workers starts its operations

The Unemployment Fund of the Wood Workers, the Unemployment Fund for Industry Workers and the Metalworkers’ Unemployment Fund will merge into the Unemployment Fund of Finnish Industrial Workers at the turn of the year. Preparations for the merger are currently in full swing, and the practical arrangements will continue into early 2018.

Background for the fund merger

The merger of the unemployment funds in the industrial sector is based on the unions of the sector, the Woodworkers’ Union, TEAM and the Metalworkers’ Union, merging into the Industrial Union. The goals of the union merger include a stronger position for representing interests and better service for union members. The merger of the unemployment funds also aims at a financially strong unemployment fund. The new fund offers its members competitive and evolving services and fast payment.

Customer service at the Unemployment Fund of Finnish Industrial Workers

Despite the merger, unemployment fund membership and the payment of benefits will continue as before, and the merging of the funds does not require any actions from fund members except changing your contact details if you are currently a member of the Unemployment Fund of the Wood Workers or the Unemployment Fund for Industry Workers. After the turn of the year, the central office of the unemployment fund will be located in Hakaniemi, Helsinki, at the former address of the Metalworkers’ Unemployment Fund.

The Unemployment Fund of Finnish Industrial Workers also serves its members across Finland at the regional offices of the Industrial Union where the fund’s personal customer service is available. Other locations do not offer personal customer service.

At the turn of the year, customer service will be interrupted due to the merger from 22 December 2017 to 1 January 2018. During this time, the funds cannot provide customer service and eService will not be available. More detailed information on payment schedules will be available on the websites of the unemployment funds during the end of the year. The website of the new unemployment fund will be launched at the turn of the year. Until then, the most up-to-date information will be available on the websites of the merging funds.

Unemployment Fund of Finnish Industrial Workers in figures

The Unemployment Fund of Finnish Industrial Workers is the fourth largest unemployment fund in Finland in terms of membership based on figures from 2016, and the largest unemployment fund in the industrial sector.

However, as a payer of benefits, the Unemployment Fund of Finnish Industrial Workers is the second largest. This year, the total amount of benefits paid out by the funds in the industrial sector will be considerably smaller than in 2016 due to the improved employment situation.

The monthly number of earnings-related allowance recipients at all funds has fallen in 2017; the drop in the number of recipients has been significant in the Metalworkers’ Unemployment Fund. During the autumn, the funds have had a total of almost 14,000 recipients on a monthly basis.
